Who was the new covenant wth?

Romans 8:3 What the law could not do since it was limited by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son in flesh like ours under sin's domain, and as a sin offering, 4 in order that the law's requirement would be accomplished in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:3 -- 4 may suggest that God cannot make a covenant with man, because man is incapable of keeping his end. We read again and again in the Bible that Christ's sheep were given to him and that he would not lose one of them. The sheep are referred to as the chosen or the l elect in various scriptures throughout the Bible. You can interpret Romans 8 to mean that God made a covenant with his son that his chosen would be redeemed. Doing it this way, God knew that the covenant would not be broken on either side. If it was possible for man to keep his side of the covenant then the law would be sufficient for salvation, and there would be no need for a second covenant.

Of course the argument here would be that Christ and the cross was prophesied long before Christ appeared on the earth. So could this not be the new covenant was made with man? So the question is, is this promise that was made actually a covenant, or just a promise without obligation to the one that the promise was made to. If this is a case then man would become a recipient to the covenant made between Christ and his Father without having to do anything to receive the benefits of the covenant. Is this not exactly what has happened?

Let's look at a few of the facts the elect or chosen were given to Christ before the foundation of the world, and Christ tells us that he will lose none of them. We are told that our salvation is a free gift from God and that it cannot be acquired by works. If this covenant was with man would not man have some obligation to fulfill his side of the contract? How could this new covenant be with the sinful man, if man was incapable of fulfilling his side of the agreement. But there is that one man that walked this earth that was capable of entering into a contract with the Lord and fulfilling his side of the bargain, that being Christ the Messiah.

Christ's last words on the cross was it is finished could it be that he was referring to his obligation to fulfill his side of the covenant.

Peace
Bob
